20 things only those who relocate will understand

If you have ever relocated miles away from home to a place where cultures, languages and food are so different from yours, you’ll share the same pain as me listed below. If you are going to relocate soon, check out my Relocation corner and you might be able to find the information you need and salvage your sanity a little.

1. You Suddenly Realise You are on your own

Freedom! No one to answer to, no one cares if you pick up your socks off the floor if you do your laundry every week if you party all night and get hangover all weekend. First, few months might be liberating but after which, you’ll start craving for routine and familiarity in your life.

2. You are sick and the only one who cares is a Skype away

Vice versa. You may have a loved one sick and you wish you can fly over to give him or her a hug but clocking air miles and spending money on flying every time someone is sick with flu will cause a drain on your finances. Suddenly, you’ll wish you hadn’t drank so much the night before as you nurse your flu, snuggled in your comforter, watching reruns of Friends.

3. You missed all the TV programs you used to seeing back home

Not every TV programs are streaming online or downloadable. Very soon, you’ll start missing the TV programs you get to watch the flick of your remote control.

4. You crave for your comfort food every week

Food is the pit of comfort in everyone’s soul. The more you crave for it, the more you can’t stop thinking about it. When I was in Shanghai, I was always on the hunt for Singapore’s comfort food. Never mind the tasteless chicken or the weird spices they made with, if it is the best I can find, it is the best I can make do.

5. You have to be the plumber

And the cook. The electrician. The housekeeper. All rolled into one person plus you still have to work. Welcome to the life of living by yourself! I had to fix up my furniture from IKEA and watch a tutorial video on YouTube on how to fix a leaking pipe and how to unjam a washing machine door. Quite proud of myself, otherwise I would have to wait for Daddy to come home to fix all these.

6. You lose your ‘so-called friends

Those who matters to you and kept in contact with you will become closer while you weed out those who don’t even drop a ‘happy new year’ message to you once you are out of sight.

7. You missed every major milestone in your family’s lives

Your grandma’s 80th birthday, your nephew’s first tooth, your parents’ new home, your sister’s first break up, your niece’s first job, your cousin’s got engaged…

8. Your friends moved on without you

You felt that you are stuck in the same time zone when you left. When you go back for a visit, all of the sudden, your best friend is having a baby and your friends are all either married, divorced or on a brink of something. You never felt so excluded.

9. You worked even harder to prove your existence

Whether it is due to your non-existence back home or your gratefulness for relocation opportunity, you push your limits to prove your worth.

10. You’ll have all weekends to yourself and not knowing what to do

Back home, you used to have family obligations and social events to keep you out of the house. Now, being alone, you wonder how you’ll going to survive the next weekend after you completed the last season of How I Met Your Mother tonight.

Tip: Sign up with LadyRedot and read about the fantastic places you can visit over the weekends.
