10 Must Have Tips for Dealing with Toxic People at Work

Some toxic people can make your work experience more complex in every workplace. These people are those who can stress you out with their very presence, actions, behaviours and quirks. Some of these toxic people don’t know they are causing their coworkers stress, while others thrive in the chaotic work environment and further incite tension.

Prolonged exposure to these stressful colleagues can take a physical and mental toll on you, affecting your work performance and overall health. Fortunately, there are ways to deal with these toxic colleagues at work and protect you from their negative influence.

Down below are 10 great tips you can adapt to your work life to help you deal with toxic people at work:

1. Set Limits

They want people to experience their suffering to feel better for toxic people. While you can ignore them, you may end up getting pressured to listen to them so they won’t see you as a rude colleague.

However, you need to set a limit as to how much “whining” or “complaining” you will listen to before you say “enough.” One good way to put a boundary is by asking these people how they will solve their problems.

2. Rise Above The Challenges

The longer you are with toxic people, the more they can drive you crazy. But, you shouldn’t let yourself get sucked into their affairs and affect you.

Set your distance from them and if you need to interact with them, treat them civilly and only speak to them about work and not their personal life.

3. Set Boundaries

Once you can set limits and rise to the challenge of dealing with these toxic people, you will be able to see their behaviour clearly and understand the best way to deal with them.

You can set boundaries that you have to enact proactively to get out of sticky situations brought by these toxic people.

4. Focus On The Solutions, Not The Problems

When dealing with toxic people, you shouldn’t focus on them and their behaviour because it only gives them power over your thoughts. Stop thinking about the problems they are causing and focus on how you can deal with their behaviour.

This will provide you with control over your emotions and reduce your stress whenever you are dealing with an unreasonable coworker.

5. Seek Help

You can only do so much on your own when dealing with toxic people, especially when all the stressful things at work pile together.

During these times, don’t be afraid to ask for help from your teammates and family to help you see the situation in a different light.

6. Realising That These People Don’t Care About Their Behaviour’s Effects On You

You are only wasting your time trying to appeal to these difficult people, especially if they won’t admit their mistakes and cause problems.

You can try reasoning to them or telling them that their actions affect the team. But, they won’t listen to you because the only thing that matters to them is themselves; instead of focusing on other things that will improve your work conditions and mindset, use the time.

7. Focus On The Positive

A great way to focus more on yourself and not your toxic colleagues is by thinking about what you are thankful for each day. You can discuss it with your colleagues, and it can help spread positivity in the workplace.

8. Get Them Out Of Your Head

If you let these people get into your head, it can be hard to get rid of the negativity they will bring. After work, don’t think about them and obsess about them outside of work. It will affect your emotions for the rest of the day and make things worse for you.

9. Meditate

To get rid of stress, meditation is an excellent activity between work. Meditation can help clear your mind of negative thoughts and help you focus on positive things.

10. Take Care Of Yourself

When dealing with a toxic person, you need to make sure you strengthen yourself. Focus on the positive, get a break and keep yourself healthy. If you focus on these good things, you will deal with these toxic people better and not let them ruin your day.

Having toxic people in the workplace is unavoidable as it is a part of any work-life, and you will need to learn how to adapt to these people and not affect your work performance. With these tips above, you can reduce the adverse effects of these people in your life and learn how to handle stress better.
