Are you always asking yourself if your salary is still enough for your daily needs and then some? This question is not unusual because each person desires to have compensation that can cover everything we need and provide a little extra for other purchases. Others will also say a high salary is the hallmark of one’s worth as a professional.
But, before you run to your HR department for a raise to help you with your expenses, you need to check your finances first to see if it may be how you spend your salary causing your problems.
So, when can you tell if it is time for you to get a higher salary? Here are the five signs you need to look for:
1. Your Credit Cards Are Maxed Out Every Month
Do you use credit cards to pay your monthly expenses before your salary? There is nothing wrong with using credit cards because it is meant to be an alternative to cash when you don’t have some on hand. However, if you keep maxing your cards and your salary is not enough for payments regardless of your budgeting, this is a clear sign to consider.
2. You Do Not Have Any Savings
If your salary is enough for all your expenses, you may be able to start building a savings account which you can use for essential expenses and emergencies. If it does not increase monthly, you have a problem with your salary. The ideal salary should allow you to save at least 20% of your pay for your savings. If it is lower, it means you are either spending a lot or earning low.
3. You Don’t Have Any Cash Before The End Of The Month
If your salary is enough and you can cover your expenses well, then it shouldn’t be impossible to have money to spare in your bank account. However, if you don’t have some in your bank account until the end of the month, it means you are living on your paycheck, and it can be stressful to deal with every month.
4. You Are Paid Less Than Your Colleagues
You can also tell if you need to consider a high salary if your average salary is lower than your colleagues at the same level as you. The general rule is that employees of the same rank should be paid the same. But, if your coworkers are getting more than you, you need to check your salary package and renegotiate with your boss.
5. You Are Always Behind Your Bills
You will need to see if your salary won’t cause you to have problems keeping up with your bills. You should be able to pay off your electricity, water, internet and rent first, then budget the others for your other expenses.
If one or more of these signs apply to your situation, you can reach out to your HR department to renegotiate your salary even if you have done your best to budget. Remember, it is best to work to live a comfortable life and not be a martyr regarding your finances. If your work situation is no longer helping you make your life comfortable, you should look for career opportunities that can help you do that.
