The day and age of getting a job, staying in it for 40 years and then retiring have gone, thankfully. Instead of people climbing up a corporate ladder they hop around on different lilypads. It is just how things are done these days. People want to try and new environments and get more experience and there is nothing wrong with that. It does, however, mean that you’ll be on the job hunt more often.
As such, we have come up with a list of ways in which you can make yourself more attractive to potential employers, all of which comes down to your ability to market yourself better.
Be The Round Peg
To put it simply, employers want to hire a round peg to fit in the round hole, so meet that requirement. Sure, you may want to stretch your wings and try something new that you’ve never tried before, but there isn’t much to be gained from that if you are the employer. That is why it is so important you tailor your resume to each job application. Turn it into a story, one where everything you have done has led to this point and that makes you the best candidate for the role.
Go Back to School
This may seem like a step backward but, trust us, it isn’t. In fact, going to school now will probably be more beneficial to you now than when you actually went to school. The reason for this is you’ll want to learn. You’ll have a direction in which you want to go. What’s more, an employer will like the fact you are taking your career seriously enough to go back to school. It could be that you want to improve your job prospects by seeing what accounting degrees and certifications are out there. It could be you do an evening course in graphic design to make you more useful. Perhaps you have your eye on becoming a bid manager but your writing skills aren’t up to scratch. It could be that you want to become a bereavement counselor and studying is the best option.
Google Yourself
Yeah, Facebook could let you down here. You see, over 78% of employers always Google their candidates before employing them. You may think this is unfair, but you’d do the same in their position. But it isn’t just the dunk photos that they are looking for. In fact, the drunk photos may not hurt you as much as you think, because they will be looking for personalities that will fit in with their team. If the job is social, then this is part of it. What won’t be great is if you have status’ made up of impassioned rants about your previous employer and how unfair it was that they wouldn’t grant you the holiday time you requested. That will reflect pretty badly on you. Instead, make your online profile more attractive. Start blogging on LinkedIn, join online communities and contribute in specialist forums. It all helps.
