If you are oblivious to Garfield comics, please allow me to educate you that cuddly fat cat hates Monday. Comic strip portrays him to be a lazy and cynical orange cat. He loves lasagna and coffee, and hates Mondays, Nermal and raisins.
My post today is to tell you don’t be a Garfield at work. I know it’s hard, it’s the start of yet another never ending work piling week and most of the meetings starts early on Mondays (why….?!).
1. Your Mood gets people down Whether you are working alone or with a team or you are the boss of your own firm, the best way to spoil everyone’s mood is by storming into office at 9 in the morning, ignoring your co-workers’ sleepy greetings and proceed by lashing out at the computer because it is taking too slow for you to start up.
2. When the going gets tough… Regardless whether it is a Monday or not, if I know I have a full day ahead, I’ll blast my battle song in full blast on my iPod on the way to work. I have a list of them and some being my favourites are “Welcome to the Jungle” by Guns & Roses, “Radioactive” by Imagine Dragons, “Come Undone” by Duran Duran and the latest one being the instrumental theme song from Jurassic Park. You’ll be surprised how music can change your mood from zero to hero.
3. Eat Your body is not fully awake yet and your eyes are groggy, your mouth is dry from the coffee intake this morning. Eat a breakfast! Go and grab a bagel while waiting for your laptop to start-up. Or grab someone to go for a short breakfast meet up. I love to pick someone from my team randomly and go for a quick bite and a cuppa. Not talk about work but to hear what they have done over the weekend. They’ll be surprised you want to hear all that and even bond better with you over an informal break.
4. Power Dress You’ll be pleasantly surprised that when you look good, naturally you’ll feel good as well. Whenever I’m done with shopping, I don’t always wear all my newly bought clothes immediately. I’ll save one or two pieces I know I look great in to wear on “It’s those *groan* days again…”. The power of swishing the new silk skirt around your knees or the emerald-green that brings out your features or the deep red skinny tie, even there’s no one to compliment you, you feel good already before you step out of your house.
5. Small Quirks I had thought this only applies to me and I was delighted to find out I’m not the only one. When the week starts out tough, I’ll go and reward myself on a Wednesday, something new in the stationary department. It’s not expensive so I don’t feel guilty of indulging myself. It’s the little things like a feel of a good smooth ballpoint pen in your hand, the crisp white pages of a new notebook, even the quirky box of neon colors paper clips. I know someone who changes his iPhone covers every time he feels down, dressing up his mobile gives him a sense of cheap thrill. Another girlfriend of mine will paint her nails whenever her energy is low, she claims that she is instantly happy when she sees her newly colored fingers fly across the keyboard.
These 5 ways will deter you becoming a Garfield. Don’t be a grumpy fool, get gear up! Have a Manic Monday!
