How to Ace that Promotion Interview

Have you been working for a long time in your company and now being considered for a promotion? If your answer is yes, you will need to make sure that you ace the promotion interview to get the promotion in the bag.

Promotion interviews are different from job interviews because the company already knows who you are. For this interview, they will check what you have to offer and whether you will be able to deal with the promotion. The interview is also more challenging because the company has high expectations from you compared to those applying for the job.

Here are some great tips on how you can ace your promotion interview:

Speak to your Team Leader or Supervisor

Before your promotion interview, or if you are considering it, speak to your supervisor or team leader.

Ask them about their opinions regarding your contributions and tips for acing the promotion interview. You can use what they say to prepare for the interview accordingly.

Even if you don’t get the promotion this time round, keep the conversation open and let them know that you are still interested when the next opportunity presents itself.

Understand the Promotion Process and Prepare Accordingly

Like typical job interviews, make sure you review how the promotion process works and what you should expect during the interview. Some of the things you should look into include who the interviewer is, what will be asked, and the promotion being offered to you.

You can also take this chance to speak to the person you might be replacing for some tips regarding the position.

Do Good Work Consistently!

Since you are already in the company, you have a considerable advantage already over the other candidates because the company already sees your work.

Therefore, you should show that you are consistent with your work and are constantly improving or growing in your position.

Follow the Interview Protocols

Even though you are not an outsider applying for the job, you should still treat it like any other interview.

Follow all the interview rules and prepare like any other candidate. Don’t use your connections to get the promotion even though you haven’t been assessed yet.

Stay Professional

You should also stay professional, especially during your interview. It will show that you are serious about the job and that you are the right candidate for the job.

Even if you are gunning for the promotion, if you don’t show that you are serious, you will be skipped over for another person.

Thank Them!

It is always ideal to thank the interviewer for their time whether you get the promotion or not.

As you do so, reiterate that you are very thankful that you were considered and that you are always ready to take on the position. If you are getting a promotion interview, don’t immediately think you will clench the job just because you are already in the company.

Make sure to prepare accordingly, and if you don’t get it, you can always try again. It’s not the end of the world! If you get it, do your best and show the company that their trust in your skills is warranted.
