After a busy year, the office’s Christmas party is the most talked about and awaited event. Its a way for employees to unwind and meet up with their friends from other departments.
However, not everyone likes going to parties and sometimes, parties can go wild to the point you may end up doing something that may cost you your job.
If you don’t know how to behave at your office Christmas party, here are 8 tips I can recommend:
#1 Don’t splurge too much on alcohol
There is no fun when there is no alcohol in a party and for Christmas parties, it is a staple. While this may be the case, you need to remember that not everyone has a high alcohol tolerance.
If you get intoxicated, you may do things you may regret and not know you did it because you black out. These things can haunt you at work, so you need to limit your alcohol in take during these parties and find another way to have fun.
#2 Don’t do anything you will regret
Let me further elaborate the above point.
It may be your Christmas party but that doesn’t mean you will let go of your control and do whatever you want without fear. There have been many cases where conflicts between colleagues begin because of one’s inappropriate behaviour during a party or so.
Always remain respectful during these parties and don’t do anything that will insult anyone or anything insensitive.
#3 Do not use social media
Since Christmas parties are a way to have fun, there will be instances that you will see people doing things you didn’t expect. It can be pretty tempting to post photos of these things on social media.
However, it can be dangerous for your company’s business and paint a bad picture about you and your coworkers. So leave it to your marketing person who is in charge of posting these photos in a professional way.
#4 Don’t join office gossip
Even if you are in a party, its not a reason to join in the gossip about your coworkers. If you are intoxicated by alcohol, the things you say may be taken in a different context and lead to further conflict.
It may also be harmful for yourself or your colleague who will be isolated because of the “gossip” about them. As much as possible, don’t entertain these gossips and speak accordingly.
#5 Do your best to attend and know the rules
Even if you don’t like parties, try your best to attend because it is a great way to get to know your colleagues. It also boost confidence, especially for the team since its a sign you are adjusting well.
Before you come to the party, find out about the rules like if you need to send your RVSP response, what dress code will be followed and what time it is going to be held.
Even if it is a party, you need to follow party etiquette! This means no raunchy behaviour!
#6 Dress Appropriately
Unless it is a costume theme party, try not to dress over the top. This also means nothing that is too sexy or too casual.
Even in an informal setting like office party, it doesn’t mean you can turn up in berms and slippers or in skirt so short that you can’t bend over without showing all your lady bits.
Keep it classy and cool.
#7 Do your best to participate
Office parties are not just meant to give you a reason to unwind. It is also a way to get you to meet other workers and bond with them.
Try your best to participate in the games and talk to others. You will slowly lose that shyness as you join the party.
This is a great way to understand how each department functions and also to network your way to a lateral promotion!
#8 Plan ahead
You can never tell what will happen in a party and you may end up having problems going home.
Before you go to the party, look at all the options you have in going home. You can organize an office carpool so you guys can go home even if you end up drunk or take an Uber home.
Remember, safety also counts!
Conclusion
Office Christmas parties can get a little crazy since it is there to help you unwind and not think of work for the day. However, you must remember that you may have work the next day so you need to balance things accordingly.
The tips above hopefully can give you enough means to plan accordingly before you attend the party. When you put these tips in mind, you will be able to enjoy your party with ease.
Have fun!
