Signs Your Employees Think You Suck as a Manager

When you are tasked to manage your own team, your boss grades you based on how well your team delivered. However, even if your boss approves of your performance in managing your team, it is possible your co-workers don’t feel that way.

Unfortunately, it is difficult to determine how your co-workers feel because they would not say it outright.

So, what should you do if you want to continue on with your management career? Here are three signs your employees may show that indicates they are now happy with you:

  1. You are a Ghost

Every office has a “Ghost” in their midst, someone who people try to ignore but still recognise. When you come to work, your co-workers or your team will try their best to ignore you by acting busy but still recognise you are there.

If your team does this to you, it is best you take some time to think what you have done to warrant it and revise your management style accordingly.

While it is ok you are not their best friend, they should still respect your presence and acknowledge you when you come by.

  1. You are Out of the Loop

In any office or team, there are people who would prefer to keep everything under wraps and not divulge them to their superior. No matter how simple or severe the issue is, the team may keep it from you even if you need to intervene.

In order to prevent your team from keeping you out of the loop, try to become more active and get involved.

Ask your team how things are going and if you want to clarify something, don’t be afraid to ask. You need to show to your team that you are willing to listen and they can count on you!

  1. They Go Under the Belt

Managers are expected to be friendly with their teammates; however, it is important that you ensure that your team follows the rules.

This will show you and your company that they are doing their job well and you are doing your task as a manager well. If they tend to go under the belt and violate your company’s policies, you need to put a stop to it.

There are certain rules meant to be bend and some rules aren’t. I cannot tolerate if any of my team abuses another coworker. Or disappeared from work for 3 days without a good reason. Or surfing porn in the office.

Some lines are just not meant to be crossed.

If one of your team members act like this, it is best that you speak to them and show them that you mean business.

If they continue to disregard what you are saying, they must be prepared to face the effects of their act. Confront them together with HR and warn them about the consequences if they continued.

Conclusion

Being a manager is a tough career because you have to make sure that everyone works well with one another and respect one another. If you lose the respect of your co-workers, your working environment can become harder to manage.

Fortunately, if you spot these three signs, you can revise your management style accordingly and ensure that your team will be at ease with you. It will also help you grow as a leader and boost your career.
