What is a Good Reason to Cancel a Job Interview

You can never tell when a certain event or situation can occur that will cause you to make hard decisions, which may include cancelling a job interview at a moment’s notice. As a job seeker, making this decision to cancel must be done immediately to protect your chances in your dream role, and it must be for the right reasons.

But, what exactly are legitimate reasons to cancel a job interview? Here is a shortlist of reasons that you can cite to the hiring manager:

Harsh Weather Conditions, Natural Disasters, And Road Accidents

It is a cardinal rule that you need to go to your interview location early, so you don’t miss it or be late. However, you can never tell when the weather will change or when a road accident will happen. If you find yourself stuck in one of these situations, let your interviewer know right away so they can reschedule the meeting. They will also appreciate that you made an effort to reach out and you respect that they have other engagements to meet.

Illness

If you do not feel well for any reason, may it be a simple cold or something more serious, don’t hesitate to speak to the interviewer. Interviewers want to see you at your best because if you are not sick, you may not perform your best, affecting your chances of securing the job. Be very honest when telling the interviewer what ailment you are experiencing without detailing too much or exaggerating what you feel about your illness.

Unforeseen Emergencies

Emergencies can happen at any time. They could be family-related ones, medical emergencies and even natural disasters. Interviewers understand the importance of these emergencies and will give you leeway when rescheduling your next appointment.

However, you do not need to go into specifics because possible employers may consider you as someone who cannot understand the meaning of confidentiality and eliminate you from the list of potential employees. It is essential to notify them as quickly as possible so they can sort out their schedule and your rescheduled slot.

No Longer Interested In The Position

You can cancel the job interview if you are no longer interested in the position. Perhaps you’ve got another post in another company, or you don’t see yourself in the position offered.

Although employers will be disappointed with your response, letting them know why you are no longer interested will show that you have respect for their time. It also increases the possibility that they may reach you again if they have better opportunities for you to consider.

Conclusion

If you find yourself in these situations, don’t hesitate to reach out to the hiring manager and let them know. Letting them know early and explaining your current circumstances makes it possible to get reschedule and not burn bridges.
