Working at One of these Jobs? You are Likely to be Single

For many of us, pursuing a specific career takes a lot of time to consider. Each career has its pros and cons from a career standpoint which makes the choice more difficult to handle.

But, what some of us fail to consider sometimes is the fact we often forget about our love life when looking at these careers.

As a result, we are stuck being single and stick on one job because we remain undecided with our career choices and become too focused on one job.

Here are some of the jobs that are currently considered jobs only single people are known to hold for a long period of time:

1. Bartenders

The long hours, late night shifts and not to mention that bartenders tend to work on weekends and holidays makes it difficult to hold on to a long-lasting relationship. Sure, it is easy to meet people at the bar or pub. But in a serious relationship, most partners will prefer if their other halves doesn’t mingle around the party crowd night after night.

2. Food Servers

Same as the bartenders and probably harder to meet someone new as a food server. It can also be backbreaking work, depending on the size of the traffic and the restaurant / cafe you work in.

3. Tour Guides

I always wanted to become a tour guide however, the pay plus the hours doesn’t justify the sweat on the job. It is like a nanny to a busload of tourists, going to the same location every week. You do meet new people but they are likely to be families and couples.

4. Health care workers

Doctors, Surgeons, Nurses, Lab Technicians and all those health care professionals usually work round the clock especially when there is a virus outbreak like Covid-19 or SARS. It is hard to maintain a healthy relationship with someone when you are not physically there at the time.

5. Flight attendants

Flying around the world seems to be an attractive choice when you are young and carefree but many of my friends who are flight attendants confessed that it is difficult to find time for a serious relationship. They missed anniversaries, birthdays and important holidays. Suddenly, spending Christmas in Paris all alone isn’t that attractive anymore.

Why are these careers mostly filled by single people?

When you look at the industries of these top 10 jobs, you can see that they are from high-turnover industries. These industries often cause people to resign and look for other careers.

One reason, experts say, cause people to stick to these jobs is because they are still trying to grasp their career and ensure it is stable. Since their focus is on their career, they don’t have the time to fit their personal life.

While these jobs do allow people to travel around for work, some of them believe it is better to travel on their own and not bring a partner so they can focus on their career.

People also end up staying in these careers for a longer period of time because of the commissions they can collect. If they work longer, they will get more money. This then reduces their chance to do something outside work and focus on their relationships.

This reasoning is logically sound because careers like bartenders can earn a lot more if they work in longer hours and if they know how to reach out to people.

Will this trend continue?

It is possible that the trend of more single people in these careers will grow, especially as many are now focused mostly on their careers.

Women, in particular, would be more inclined to focus on making sure their jobs are stable before they look into their other things like love life and retirement.

Men may also stay in their jobs while staying single for long because it will allow them to support their families.

If you are in either one of these careers and still single, don’t be ashamed. Each one of us has different priorities and it just so happens that we are more focused on job security to ensure we have a stable future.

Of course, you will need to make an effort to balance out your work and your life outside work because if you only focus on work, you may end up burning yourself out and reduce your chances of having a family.

So it is important to work at maintaining that balance of work and personal and not allow work to consume the quality time you should have with your loved ones.
