How to Overcome Job Interview Anxiety

Scheduled for a job interview? It can be very stressful to be in one, especially if it is your first job.

Don’t worry because everyone had this feeling at some point in their life. For others, they have to do it several times because of their career options. A few would find it more nerve-wracking because it may be one of those rare chances that they get to be interviewed for a job opportunity.

Whatever situation you are in, letting your anxiety go wild before a job interview can be dangerous. If you are not careful, the interviewer may notice it more than your potential as an employee for their company.

Fortunately, there are ways to manage your nerves before this important meeting. To get you started, here are some tips to help you overcome your job interview anxiety:

Be Prepared

Being prepared in advance before your interview can do wonders when dealing with job interview anxiety. If you research ahead of time on some potential interview questions, you can prepare and practise your answers in front of the mirror or with another person. This will give you enough confidence to answer the questions during the actual interview and ace it.

Think Positive

Aside from being prepared for the interview, you also need to think positively that things will go smoothly for your job interview. While it is indeed frustrating and difficult to search for a job and score an interview, having a positive mindset is the key to help you sell yourself better during the interview. Being pessimistic can only prevent you from answering the questions clearly and confidently, and the interviewer will just see that you are not ready for it.

Don’t Let Yourself Become Desperate

Some people experience anxiety during job interviews because they see it as their last desperate attempt to get a job. Having this mindset is dangerous because people will think that you are too needy and desperate. This can eventually be awkward for employers to talk to you further. In job interviews, you have to show what you can do and impress the hiring manager that you are the best person in the job.

Keep in mind that there are other opportunities out there you can check once this interview is over and you don’t make the cut. Just keep at it, and you will find the one that works for you.

Exercise

Doing physical exercises can do wonders in reducing your stress level, especially if you feel like it is peaking up. Before your interview, walk around or do some basic stretching to control your anxiety levels. These short exercises can distract you from thinking about your anxiety.

Relax

Also, take your time to relax by doing some relaxation techniques and activities to get your mind away from your anxiety. From taking deep breaths to just having your favourite cup of tea, do anything to let your mind cool down. You will definitely see a difference in your mindset, and you can better prepare for the interview.

Personal Tip:

Before a job interview, I would do a lot of research into the company, the hiring manager, and the HR. I feel that I wouldn’t be so nervous if I know the person who will interview me.

Next, if I can understand one of the problems or bottlenecks that the company has, for example, this problem prevents them from expanding their business, I will quickly divert the interview on this light and showcase my thoughts on how they can resolve the issues quickly.

On the one hand, I hope to impress the interviewer with my problem-solving skills and my sincerity to think on behalf of the company. On the other hand, once I dived into solving issues for other people, all my nervousness evaporates, leaving me with only my focus and determination to fix the situation at hand.

If I can make the interviewer “forget” that we are in an interview and I am perceived as an employee presenting my solutions, my hiring chances will certainly go up to 80%.

Conclusion

Job interviews can be really stressful because it can make or break your career path. However, do not let anxiety stop you from achieving your career goals and dreams. Deal with your anxiety using these simple tips prior to having that job interview that you have been waiting for. You can definitely change your mindset and ace your interview with flying colours.
