I was talking to one of my ex-colleagues and she reveals to me that the company that I had previously worked in has changed so much in the past years that it becomes almost unbearable to work in. The management has changed so has the directions. And that made me sad.
There are a lot of things in the corporate world that makes me sad and I want to pour them out today here, maybe you’ll share the same emotions as I have.
Changing Directions
While I understand that in order to survive the dog-eat-dog world, businesses need to constantly evolve and keep up with the business trends in order to bring profits.
What’s sad is when they forget that what are their core mission when they first started out and start pursuing market share too aggressively.
By doing so, you will lose your precious customers and even worse, lose your most precious asset – dedicated employees.
Cut Throat Decisions
I get it. I’m not naive and I’m all for productivity and performance indicators. However, when a bad decision is made without consulting the employees, it makes me sad and mad at the same time.
When businesses take a risk and make bad decisions, it is very difficult to turn back the situation to once it was. Major decisions shouldn’t be taken so lightly and all considerations should be well thought of.
Forgotten Assets
Besides customers, one of the important assets of a company is her workers. Happy employees mean happy customers will bring in profits again and again.
When a company expands far too quickly or try to grab as much market share as they can, they tend to forget this particular asset. A company is like one big team working towards the same goal.
If you have more than 40% of your employees not satisfied, it’s either you replace them or they’ll eventually replace you. I am sad when I see loyalty in the company is misplaced and dismissed.
Profits vs Customer Service
When the importance on profits tipped the scales over the importance of customer service, everything changes. If the company thinks that one or two disgruntled customers no longer matter to them, the whole customer care system crashes.
It does matter.
Every customer, big spender or budget money pincher, it all boils down to making your customers happy. Sure, I know you can’t please everyone but if one customer is unhappy, you’ve got to evaluate what went wrong and if it is reasonable for the customer to be unhappy about.
There are plenty of customers like myself will be silent about poor services and choose to walk away without voicing our disappointment. The one customer who complains actually voice out what maybe 10 customers who silently choosing to walk away.
Maybe it is Time to Go
When employees don’t see the bigger vision behind the change in direction, it can be hard to convince themselves to invest their efforts in producing amazing work. Likewise, if they don’t see a clear career path in front of them, after a period of employment, they start to lose hope in getting a promotion or even taking on more responsibilities to learn something new.
Wandering eye start to prevail at this point and start scouting for greener pastures elsewhere. It makes me sad that companies are losing their best and talented employees without knowing why and how the outcome will eventually impact profits.
Conclusion
It doesn’t take much to keep your employees in the loop and seek their opinions on some of the organizations’ decisions. Particularly if the decision will affect everybody. On the other hand, it will take a lot of effort and time to gain back what is lost.
