Are you a new employee? You may be curious about the possibility of facing corporate hazing.
There have been growing reports of hazing incidents in various workplaces. These cases have led to employees quitting their jobs early and employees suffering from mental health issues even if they came clear of these problems when they started.
Unfortunately, these incidents are often undiscovered because not all know the signs of corporate hazing. So, what exactly is it, and how can you spot it? Here’s a quick overview of corporate hazing and what counts as hazing.
What Is Corporate Hazing?
Corporate hazing is a term used to classify behaviours that cause an employee to feel humiliated, threatened or harassed. Usually, the victims of these behaviours are new employees, and those who commit it are the seniors who wish to establish their position and job. Some seniors do the act to exploit the new employee.
Corporate hazing often involves a group, and for some reason, it is considered by some as an ice-breaker for new employees.
What Actions Count As Hazing?
Corporate hazing can be hard to detect because the perpetrators usually hide their actions behind jokes or harmless pranks. Here are some activities that you should look for to determine if it’s hazing:
Belittling a person’s suggestions and opinions as a way to humiliate them
Regularly criticizing a person to the point that they would snap and have problems with their mental health
Threatening the person as a form of initiation
Hurting the person by pinning objects on their skin
Humiliating or belittling a person through verbal and written messages
Forcing a person to commit illegal and harmful activity
Water abuse
Malicious pranks
Forced substance abuse
Coercing further acts of hazing
Spreading gossip and innuendo with malicious intentions
Yelling profanities
What Can Be Done To Stop It?
If you are already employed in the company and notice someone being hazed by your colleagues, many ways can be done to stop it. One is to fight for an awareness program against workplace hazing and inform people about it. The program should be duly enforced so every employee is aware of it and dissuades those who commit the act to stop. Another way is to act immediately when a case is reported because if it is not reported immediately, people will ignore the existing policies against corporate hazing.
Whether this is your first job or foray into corporate work, it is vital to be aware of corporate hazing. It will allow you to protect yourself from such acts, but you can also spot it if it happens to others. When it happens to you and another person, don’t hesitate to report them to the right people. It would be difficult for any company to retain their talents and achieve their goals if it persists.
Remember, everyone deserves respect, even if they are new to the company.
