In a work week, it is not always guaranteed that you will find your boss or team leader at work. They may be busy attending meetings or events or doing their tasks overseas or at
home.
When this happens, what should you do? Do you use the time to take a break? Should you continue with your projects even if they are not around?
Studies have shown that teams will need a leader to stay productive and orderly because when they are not around, here are the things that happen:
– Disorganised Team
One of the most notable things when your team leader isn’t around is the team’s disorganisation. Team members are uninterested in speaking to one another, and it is harder for tasks to be done. With leaders present, they ensure that everyone is on hand with their tasks and be the middleman to speak to each member if there are any issues.
– Indecisive Team
Influential leaders can inspire and empower their teams to make decisions for themselves and progress in their assigned tasks. However, if the leader isn’t around, team members cannot make decisions for themselves and do their duties promptly.
– Loss Of Integrity
Often leaders serve as the role model of the entire team in terms of the values one needs to have and what behaviour one should emulate. Without the team’s leader, it is pretty easy for team members to forget their principles and the values they believe in.
– Fragmented Teams
Leaders can work with all types of workers and identify how to help them discover their potential. They can also identify which tasks would fit each team member and ensure that everyone meets their deadlines. The lack of a leader in the team causes teams to break up into smaller groups and fail to work with other groups.
– No Direction
Without a leader, it is hard for the rest of the team to achieve their goals because they cannot identify and work together to achieve them. It is also difficult for team members to work on things because they cannot determine the right direction to complete the task perfectly. With a leader present in the team, they know exactly what to do to achieve the team’s targets and lead the team in the right direction.
Don’t Let A Team Be Leaderless
Notably, a leader needs to groom a successor (maybe two) to take over command at times. This begins with correctly identifying a suitable candidate. Next, a leader should provide ample opportunities for the incumbent to learn. Whether stepping up to lead a big project or stepping in between the gaps when your leader takes a break, these will be moments where the earmarked individual manages tasks like a leader. Personally, I usually will be grooming at least 2 individuals, rotating quarterly so I give everyone a chance in my team to shine.
To succeed as a team, you need everyone to work like a team, even if you constantly disagree with your leader. A leader can guide the team to each challenge they must face and ensure everyone’s prepared to do their respective tasks without worries.
Don’t be afraid to voice out if you think you have what it takes to be a leader and have proven track records that support your belief. And, to show your appreciation to your leaders, be an active team member and ask when you need help. Your team leader or boss will appreciate it and do their best to make the team experience stress-free for all.
